Revit Model QA Checklist: Pre-Submission Checks for Data Center BIM

A model that passes QA before sharing catches issues that would otherwise become coordination noise.

This is a delivery-method resource, not project-specific design. Electrical protection, cable sizing, cooling capacity, fire strategy and structural loads require the appointed designers and the applicable codes. Quality assurance on a Revit model is not a final sign-off — it is a repeatable check that happens before every significant exchange. A model that passes QA before moving from WIP to Shared catches coordinate misalignment, orphaned elements, excessive warnings and naming violations early. A model that skips QA exports these problems into the federated model, where they become everyone's problem.

Purpose of model QA

Model QA verifies that a Revit model meets defined standards before it is shared or published. It is not design review — it does not check whether the design is correct. It checks whether the model is healthy, coordinated and compliant with the BEP.

  • Catches problems before they propagate to federation and clash detection.
  • Ensures naming, coordinates and workset structure follow BEP requirements.
  • Reduces noise in coordination — fewer false clashes from misaligned or orphaned elements.
  • Creates a consistent baseline for model exchanges.

When to run QA

  • Before promoting from WIP to Shared — minimum requirement.
  • Before any formal exchange or milestone delivery.
  • After major model changes (restructuring, coordinate updates, content imports).
  • At regular intervals during active modelling (weekly as part of discipline routine).

QA tools and automation

Manual checks are necessary but can be supplemented with tools:

  • Revit built-in: Review Warnings, Purge Unused, Audit.
  • Model Checker (Autodesk): configurable rule-based checking.
  • BIM Interoperability Tools: IFC export validation.
  • Dynamo scripts: custom checks for naming, parameters, worksets.
  • Third-party: BIMcollab, Solibri (for IFC-based checking).

Common QA failures

Warnings ignored because the model still works

Why it happens. Warnings seem cosmetic.

Impact. Warnings accumulate; some cause export failures or clash noise.

Mitigation. Set warning count targets; review critical warnings every QA cycle.

Coordinates never verified against other disciplines

Why it happens. Assumed everyone followed the same setup.

Impact. Misalignment discovered at federation, not QA.

Mitigation. Test export and visual alignment check before first Shared upload.

QA skipped due to deadline pressure

Why it happens. We will fix it in the next round.

Impact. Problems exported; coordination team inherits them.

Mitigation. QA is part of the delivery, not an optional extra.

FAQ

Who runs model QA?
The discipline modeller runs QA before promoting to Shared. The BIM manager or coordinator may run a secondary QA on received models. Both checks add value.
What warning count is acceptable?
Zero is ideal but rarely achieved on large models. Set a target (e.g. under 100) and review remaining warnings to ensure none are critical. Critical warnings include duplicate instances, room bounding issues and unresolved constraints.
Should QA results be documented?
Yes, at least for milestone exchanges. A QA log showing date, checker, warning count and open issues provides an audit trail and helps track model health over time.
